¿Qué nos hace ser una comunidad?
What makes us a community?
Located in the heart of Southern Arizona’s border with neighboring Mexico, Santa Cruz County is a place like no other. Whether it is the warmth of our people and our heritage’s roots across centuries, languages, and culture which bind us here or the dynamism of our high desert grasslands, hills, and Sky Island mountain ranges – home of Arizona’s jaguars – Santa Cruz County has something special for everyone

Rediscover this beloved land through “BEYOND FRONTERAS: The Story of Arizona’s Santa Cruz County,” a multimedia local history educational project sponsored by the Santa Cruz County School Superintendent’s Office and created through the passion of our community’s residents, educators, and youth. The border (frontera in Spanish) is a major aspect of our area’s cultural, economic, and natural history.
Experience what makes us community beyond borders!
Explore more of BEYOND FRONTERAS online and rediscover the roots of Arizona’s Santa Cruz County by checking out the student opportunities, local history resources, youth artwork, and documentary films created by our project’s contributors:

My History, Mi Comunidad
YOUTH perspectives on Santa Cruz County’s history
The Santa Cruz County School Superintendent’s Office proudly sponsored BEYOND FRONTERAS, a project curated by Dr. Carlos Parra (University of Arizona History Department). BEYOND FRONTERAS was created as a way of teaching our youth about the special place they call home. We hope that by treasuring their past that our community’s young people can build a more positive future.
